TV lovers have shared their recommendations for fans of the hit anthology television series, Black Mirror.

Inspired by The Twilight Zone, the sci-fi series often explores relevant social issues set in a dystopian world similar to our reality.

There’s seven seasons to choose from, with some critics lauding it and branding it one of the greatest TV shows of recent decades. Thanks to its anthology format, episodes can be viewed in any order and have been created to stand alone – though some do include easter eggs and references to previous episodes.

One TV fan took to Reddit to ask for television shows that offer a similar premise to Netflix show Black Mirror, as well as the dark, black comedy mystery series, Inside No. 9., also an anthology show.

Each episode explores a mix of themes from comedy to horror and are linked by the number nine in some way – be it the door number to a flat, mansion, a dressing room, and in one instance, a shoe size.

This show, Black Mirror and American Horror Story have all been credited with reviving the interest in the anthology television format.

On Reddit, the fan simply asked: “Does anyone have any TV suggestions that are similar to Black Mirror and Inside No9?”

They then elaborated: “I am on the lookout for shows that have the same sort of vibe as those two. When I talk about Inside No9 I guess I am looking for things that are on the more bleak side.

“The darker the ending, the better! Obviously Black Mirror has a lot of bangers that nail that vibe, and Inside No9 can be real dark sometimes. Thanks!”

In the comments section, many people were eager to share their thoughts, with lots rushing to recommend BBC show The League of Gentlemen, which can be streamed on BBC iPlayer.

Two of the writers on this show – Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith – went on to create Inside No. 9.

The League of Gentlemen sees its creators playing all the odd inhabitants of the fictional town of Royston Vasey, creating a dark and surreal comedy show that boasts legions of fans.

One Reddit user said: “Have you also watched The League of Gentlemen? Dark, but hilariously funny, also done by some of the same guys as No 9.”

Another suggested it alongside two others: “Nighty Night, Jam, The League of Gentlemen.”

Offering a different perspective, one Reddit user said: “Can’t believe no one’s said ‘Room 104’ yet. It’s really similar to Inside No 9, every episode is different but they’re all set in the same motel room.”

While another added: “They all started with The Twilight Zone. Almost all of the Twilight Zone is available via legit means, and it is worth it.”

Many others also concurred with this recommendation, urging people to tune in to the Twilight Zone. The show, which originally aired from 1959 until 1964, premiered to rave reviews and still maintains an enduring legacy and popularity.

It’s consistently regarded as one of the greatest television shows of all time.
