Good visibility is crucial for safe driving. This is why it’s always so important to make sure you’ve got enough windscreen washer liquid in your car, so you don’t run out when you need it the most.
As the weather has gotten colder, with the UK having experienced an Arctic blast with freezing temperatures, it’s become even more important to keep stocked up on the washing liquid, as winters are known for making your car dirtier.
While windscreen wipers will be able to clear water and maybe a few other small contaminants from your windscreen, you don’t want to rely solely on them to keep your glass clean as larger bits of dirt (like bird poo) can damage the rubber. However, just like with most other things, windscreen washers have gotten more expensive to buy.
To help you save some money, Kelly Sonnenburg from the Weather Network might have just the tip for you, as she shared a simple DIY way you can make your own windscreen cleaner liquid, using just three common household ingredients.
“Winter driving season is here and that means messy roads and even messier windshields,” she said. “You’re gonna be going through a ton of windshield washer fluid this season.
She then went on to say: “Looking to save a few bucks? Ditch the storebought and make your own.”
How to make your own windscreen washer
Kelly was then seen making her own windscreen washing liquid, using only three ingredients that most people will already have available at home.
All you need to do is add four cups (946ml) of water, one half of a cup (118ml) of rubbing alcohol, and a teaspoon of dishsoap to a bowl before mixing it all together. Kelly also said you can add a few drops of blue food colouring if you want it to get the same blue colour as the store-bought kind, however this is not necessary.
“Fill up an empty container, and it looks like the real thing,” she said as she held up a jug of the mixture. “It cleans like the real thing, too.”
So is it really that easy to make? They went on to explain that the rubbing alcohol will help prevent the mixture from freezing. Meanwhile the water and dishsoap will make for the perfect mixture to clean your windscreen.

“this video needs more views,” one person said, while someone else wrote: “This was short, sweet and perfect! …right up until the blue food coloring. Why not just be clear or slightly tinged blue from the blue Dawn dish soap!”
“Thanks this will help me a lot. It’s so expensive now,” a third person said.
Another person went on to say that while it might work in areas where it doesn’t get too cold, they were sceptical whether it would work in areas where temperatures reaches -20C.
