As Christmas is coming closer, many households will be starting to pull out their Christmas decorations from wherever they’ve been hiding for the year.
To help your home feel as festive as possible, interior designer Melissa Karl from Room Remedies by Melissa has urged people to avoid doing five common decorating mistakes that she argues people often make when decorating for Christmas
“Here are five common holiday decorating mistakes to avoid this holiday season when decorating your home,” she said at the start of her video.
She then explained what you should be doing instead.
Check out her tips below to make sure your Christmas transformation is on point this festive season.
1. Not making room for Christmas tree
“The first common decorating mistake I tend to see is that people don’t want to move exisiting decor out of the way to make room for the Christmas decor,” she said.
She went on to explain how she was planning to put theChristmas tree up in a certain corner of her living room, leaving her to have to move a side table and the decor on top of it.
Not making room for your Christmas decor and leaving things where they are can lead to your home feeling more overcrowded and cluttered.
2. Not fluffing up Christmas trees
Next up, Melissa was seen sitting on the floor as she had began to build her Christmas tree when she went on to share the second mistake people often make, which is not fluffing the branches on their artificial Christmas trees.
“Fluffing just means pulling the branches apart, a lot of times,” she explained as she showed herself fluffing up one branch of her tree.
She went on to explain that the branches often will clump together in the box, and by spending a few minutes fluffing up the branches will help the tree look nice and full, without any gaps.
3. Not double checking that the lights work
“This next decorating mistake may surprise you, but it happens more often than you think,” Melissa said.
While many people will find it exciting to start decorating the tree, adding all of the baubles, tinsel, and the star on top, they might forget the crucial first step of making sure that all of the lights on the tree actually work.
“Check the lights before you decorate the tree,” she urged her viewers.
4. Choosing baubles that are too similar
For her fourth tip, Melissa went on to say that she often finds that people pick decorations for their Christmas trees that look too much alike, or that they’re all the same size.
“Be sure to mix up the textures and the sizes of your ornaments when selecting them for your tree,” she said.
5. Hanging baubles on the tip of branches
“When it comes to hanging ornaments on your tree, don’t hang the ornaments on the very tip of the branches – that will pull the branch down, and they couldn’t get bumped off,” she explained.
Instead, Melissa recommended hanging the baubles a little bit further into the branch and nestle them in order to achieve a layered look in your tree.
She also explained that she liked adding in some bigger baubles to the tree to help fill any big gaps that you might find in the tree.
