While you may be trying your very best to accommodate to your pet dog‘s needs, there are some tell-tale signs that your canine isn’t in the best mood. Dog expert of Canine Cottages, Dr Emma Theobald – who has a PhD in veterinary medicine and science – revealed the six warning signs that a dog is feeling unhappy.
“Dogs need walks and to get outdoors most days, ideally every day, for mental stimulation as well as for physical exercise,” said Dr Theobald. “If a dog isn’t given enough exercise, stimulation, or companionship, they’ll show that their needs aren’t being met.” A lack of physical and mental stimulation can result in behavioral issues, which Dr Theobald expanded on.
“The pent up physical energy and not getting enough mental stimulation can lead to behavioural issues.
“This can include behaviours such as excessive barking and whining,” said Dr Theobald.
Additional “destructive behaviours” can include “chewing furniture and walls… urinating inside and pacing obsessively around the house”.
Dogs who feel unfulfilled may also exhibit signs of anxiety, but that’s not the main sign of unhappiness.
“Signs your dog may be unhappy, including general lethargy and excessive sleeping,” said Dr Theobald.
Dogs may display apathy towards their toys, a disinterest in walks, and a lack of interest in you.
This apathy can extend to a “lack of usual enthusiasm for their food and treats, or going off them completely”.
Six signs your dog is unhappy
- General lethargy
- Excessive sleeping
- Apathy towards toys, walks and you
- Disinterest in playing or running around
- Lack of usual enthusiasm for for or treat
Dr Theobald added: “Many of these behaviours could also be a sign your dog is feeling unwell though, so it’s worth getting them checked over by a vet to rule out any medical issues too.”
