A mum has been criticised for giving one of her twins a nice name whilst the other must go through life with a ‘made-up’ moniker.
Sharing her pride in her daughters’ school results, the mother from the US shared a photograph of their GPA (grade point average) results on social media for everyone to see.
However, while some praised her daughters on their achievements, others couldn’t look beyond their names and were left wondering why the mum had opted for such unusual names.
The American mother posted: “Paige has a 2.5 GPA and Gaige has 1.45. I’m just saying pat myself on the back – single mom strong type s***.”
Garnering 1,800 likes on the post, one baffled X user remarked: “You named your kids Paige and Gaige?”
The post has subsequently been reshared on Reddit‘s ‘tragedeigh’ thread, a forum named after an online term employed to describe “a given name that has been deliberately misspelled or completely made up to appear more unique than it actually is.”
And it wasn’t just the names that left people concerned. One user commented: “Why is she proud of her kids doing poorly in school?”
“Well, maybe the momma did even worse. I mean, Gage is a name, she just really wanted it to match Paige.”
Another user added: “My niece is dating a guy named Caige. I’ve strongly discouraged the relationship based on his name alone.”
A third user said: “I can gauge that Paige is the gifted one. Gaige is going to need to take a page out of Paige’s book.”
One more user added: “I am not shocked that Gaige is nearly failing out, kid’s life has been a nightmare on the roll call sheet since day one of school.”
One user commented: “Teacher here; any parent patting themselves on the back for their kid’s 1.45 and even 2.5 GPA is literally saying, I am so proud they are dumb.”
Another user expressed: “I’m honestly more concerned by the pride in such low GPAs than the names.”
In the US, GPA is a standard method of measuring academic achievement, with 4.0 roughly equating to A, 3.0 to B, 2.0 to C, 1.0 to D, and 0.0 to F.
By this measure, Paige’s 2.5 is equivalent to about a C+, indicating she is passing her classes.
On the other hand, Gaige is achieving around a D+ or D which is viewed as a “very low” pass.
Students who score below 60% are given a fail grade, as this is when their GPA falls into the 0.0 category.
