Marks and Spencer recently announced more store closures, including its Wolverhampton city centre store on Dudley Street. The iconic store, which opened in 1929, will permanently close on September 27.
M&S explained earlier this year that the store was at risk of closure, and some of the staff were offered alternative roles. This is part of the company’s plan to cut the number of shops selling food, clothing and homeware and focus on food-only stores. The retailer announced in 2022 that it was going to shut at least 67 full-line stores but open 104 food-only stores in the next six years.
A spokesperson for M&S said: “I would like to say a huge thank you to all our customers who have shopped at M&S Wolverhampton over the years and to our colleagues, past and present. We remain committed to Wolverhampton and our search continues for a suitable alternative food location in the city.
“In the meantime, we will continue working hard to serve customers at our stores across the Black Country, including Merry Hill and our Wednesbury food hall.”

Fashion retailer New Look will shut one more store by the end of the year: the branch in Hinckley, in The Britannia Centre, Stockwell Head.
The Hinckley store will permanently close on December 9. A spokesperson for New Look said: “We would like to thank all of our colleagues and the local community for their support over the years. We hope customers continue to shop with us online, where our full product ranges can be found.”
However, New Look fans will still have three other stores nearby: in Market Harborough, Highcross Shopping Centre and Fosse Shopping Park. Other New Look shops that shut down earlier this year include branches in North Yorkshire, Essex and Wales.
