A classic Christopher Nolan thriller hailed as his finest work is now available to stream for free.
The acclaimed director’s Memento has just been added to Channel 4’s on-demand service, ready for fans to enjoy.
As with most of the British filmmaker’s films, it’s best to watch without much prior knowledge. However, we will provide a brief plot summary for new viewers.
Released in 2000, the thriller centres around Leonard (portrayed by Guy Pearce), a man on a quest to find his wife’s killer. However, the task is nearly impossible due to Leonard suffering from a rare form of amnesia, reports the Mirror.
While he can recall his life before the accident that caused his condition, the protagonist cannot create new memories. This forces him to rely on photographs, notes and tattoos to keep track of his investigation.
Through this seemingly straightforward plot, Nolan delves into profound themes such as identity, revenge and trauma.
Pearce takes the lead role, supported by Hollywood legends Carrie-Anne Moss (The Matrix) and Joe Pantoliano (The Goonies).
Given the talent of this cast, it’s no surprise that Memento was a huge success. The film garnered two Academy Award nominations for Best Original Screenplay and Best Film Editing.
It also achieved an impressive 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with audiences on the movie-rating website echoing the critics’ rating.
One critic raved about the Nolan film, stating: “Memento is a movie that definitely earns the distinction of being termed unforgettable.”
Casual cinema-goers were equally bowled over, with one declaring: “Perfection. Unparalleled originality. Far and away Nolan’s best feat, and laid the groundwork for subsequent films.”
Another enthused: “Every now and then a movie gets made where you feel like it is the first to market with a concept and near perfect in creation. This is one of them.”
IMDb users have also lavished praise on the decades-old thriller. One simply declared: “Genius thriller.”
Meanwhile, another commented: “It plays with your mind so well you walk away and contemplate on it forever. Great movie, one of Nolan’s best ever.”
And one final viewer admitted they were completely stumped by the film’s shocking twist.
“I guessed and guessed… I never got close,” they confessed.
