Outlander star Caitríona Balfe has made a startling revelation about the eighth and final series of the beloved Starz drama, following co-star Sam Heughan’s recent comments about the conclusion, whilst viewers remain enthralled by prequel series Outlander: Blood of My Blood, reports the Daily Record.
During a recent interview, the 45 year old actress was questioned about her feelings regarding the historical drama’s finale.
The Irish-born performer revealed: “Well, I don’t really know how it goes. So, we filmed variations, I guess, and you know, [showrunner] Matt [B. Roberts] will decide in the editing suite what happens, so it’ll be a surprise to me too.”
She continued by explaining how before Outlander, she had limited experience in film and television after beginning her career as a model.
Nevertheless, she revealed that working on Outlander for a decade had acted as a “university of life” and had provided her with opportunities not only to perform but also to produce and direct.
“So, it gives you the confidence to walk into any other situation and going, ‘Well, I may not have done this before, but I’ve done all that.'”
“So I think I can try and at least give it a good shot. So, I’ll always be grateful for that,” she added.
Balfe was discussing her gripping new psychological thriller The Cut, which also features Orlando Bloom and Severance’s John Turturro.
The film chronicles a former champion boxer who goes to desperate measures to reclaim his past glory at any cost whilst descending into mental chaos. Balfe portrays Caitlin Harney, the partner of Bloom’s character known simply as Boxer, standing by him during his major return to the ring, whilst Turturro takes on the role of his formidable coach Boz.
Despite being situated within the boxing world, Balfe explained the film transcends the sport itself.
“It’s about trauma. It’s about addiction. It’s about mental health. And all of those things I thought were just really interesting. The end was just the cherry on top.”
Speaking to Extra TV in another interview, Balfe remarked about The Cut: “It’s such a different character and it was so different to what I do on Outlander and that sort of was a lot of the attraction of doing this role.
“We filmed it between seasons seven and eight and it was really nice little departure from Claire for a minute.”
She added: “The character is very different to Claire and all of that, but I do think this are two very damaged people, who have found each other and they are trying to make each other’s lives and their own lives better.
“I always think of it as Caitlin has been through recovery and has perhaps more tools than Boxer has of knowing how to live a better life for herself, and Boxer is still very much holding onto these ideas that one thing is going to solve his problems.”
The Cut is screening in cinemas now
Outlander season 8 will air on Starz and MGM+ via Prime Video in early 2026
