A little detail spotted in The Godfather has left fans thrilled, but you won’t spot it on a first watch.

The Hollywood classic featured Marlon Brando and Al Pacino. Both men offered up all-time great performances under director Francis Ford Coppola’s watch, and a little detail has thrilled viewers.

Eagle-eyed viewers may notice the subtle change in the film, which has Pacino offer an acting masterclass.

Fans of the film took to the r/Godfather Reddit page and shared their thoughts on the little detail which may make it a completely different watch.

The fan wrote: “I was rewatching The Godfather, and got to the part where Michael visits his father in the hospital. I keep forgetting this little touch, and I love seeing it anew every time.

“Michael is worried about his father’s safety after the assassination attempt, and rightly so, as more goons are en route. Luckily, Enzo the baker shows up to pay his respects, and Michael enlists him to bluff the carload of goons by standing out front with a posture that suggests they’re armed.

“The detail I like so much happens after they successfully bluff the goons, who drive off after eyeing Enzo and Michael. Once the goons are gone, Enzo fumbles out a cigarette, unable to light it because his hands are shaking so badly. But not Michael’s.”

This moment may not be spotted by those watching the film for the first time, so a second watch might be needed to spot the “great little detail”.

The fan continued: “He [Michael] lights Enzo’s cigarette with cool, steady hands, and pauses for a moment as if to take note of this. That he’s seen action in war is no guarantee he’s got steady hands; in fact, trauma would possibly have the opposite effect.

“So he may very well have surprised himself. Either way, it’s one of those great little touches that illustrate Michael’s character, and foreshadow his capability to one day lead the family.

“Love it. Great movie, great little detail that speaks volumes about Michael.”

Fans chimed in to declare this moment one of the most “unique” in the film.

One fan wrote: “The beginning of the hospital scene is probably the most unique out of the movies. It feels and moves like a bad dream. Like something out of a Stephen King novel, directed by Stanley Kubrick.”

Others have noted the scene and detail is a reference to a moment in the Mario Puzo novel. A fan shared: “That whole subplot is so unnecessary, but damn this part just makes me ill.”

Another added: “Such a great little scene. How about the fact that Enzo, despite being terrified, stayed to help the Don and Michael.”
