Avocados may be a beloved kitchen staple, but their tendency to spoil quickly often leads to unnecessary food waste. However, experts have revealed a simple and affordable hack to extend their freshness by up to 14 days using a 30p pantry staple.

“Avocados are one of the most wasted foods because of their speedy ripening process,” a spokesperson from waste management specialists, Wheeldon Brothers explained. “But storing ripe avocados in the fridge can extend their freshness up to two weeks.”

To keep cut avocados from turning brown, they recommend coating the exposed flesh with lemon or lime juice.

“The natural acidity slows down oxidation and helps preserve the fruit’s colour and texture,” they said. It’s a simple, effective method that keeps avocados greener for longer.

Freezing is another way to stretch the life of avocados for up to four months, but it does have limitations.

“Frozen avocados work best in recipes where they’ll be mashed or blended, as freezing can alter the texture,” the expert warned. They advise slicing or chunking the fruit before freezing and storing it in an airtight bag.

Wheeldon Brothers also encourage shoppers to buy based on when they plan to use the fruit. “If you’re not using them immediately, choose unripe avocados and let them ripen at room temperature. Once ripe, move them to the fridge.”

With food waste on the rise in the UK, simple changes like proper avocado storage can make a meaningful difference.

“By planning ahead and using basic kitchen staples like lemon juice, households can reduce food waste, save money, and contribute to a more sustainable future,” the expert concludes.

So next time you reach for an avocado, don’t let it go to waste, just add a splash of lemon and keep it fresh.
