Australian spots huge difference with British chocolate – and it’s not taste

The UK and Australia share many cultural similarities, yet there are also striking differences. Both countries enjoy Cadbury’s chocolate, but the taste is not quite identical.

British chocolate typically boasts a higher cocoa content and less sugar than its Australian counterpart, and even the milk has a distinct flavour depending on its country of origin. However, it’s not just the ingredients that set them apart.

An astonishing difference between the two nations has left one online influencer utterly perplexed – the shape of the chocolate bars.

Australian musician Jess Chate, known as Serendipiti on TikTok, highlighted this significant “cultural difference” in a recent video. She exclaimed: “I just wanted to draw awareness to the fact that in the UK they do their chocolate in landscape. It’s in landscape. All of ours is in portrait. It’s the little things.”

Jess was pointing out that chocolate bars in the UK are oriented horizontally, whereas in Australia, the packaging is vertical. A comparison between a British and an Australian Cadbury bar reveals this stark contrast in packaging design.

Jess’s observation sparked a wave of reactions from people. One user declared it “the most original take on cultural differences I’ve heard,” while another, bewildered, admitted: “Help I grew up in the UK why have I never realised this ever.” A third chimed in with amusement: “Landscape and portrait chocolate. It’s so normal for us Brits I never noticed lol.”

Some chocolate fans have pointed out that in the UK, there’s a distinction between ‘portrait’ and ‘landscape’ chocolate. “Portrait chocolate is posh chocolate, landscape is more basic but still delicious,” one individual explained.

Another concurred: “Unless it’s posh chocolate then it’s portrait.”

Meanwhile, an online content creator named Tay, who previously lived in Australia with her English partner Alex, tested the difference between Australian and British Cadbury in a TikTok video. After sampling, she remarked: “Completely different flavour than the Australian Cadbury. A lot creamier. I feel like the Australian Cadbury tastes very artificial in a way where it was almost like a fruity flavour. […] I don’t know. It was just a weird taste, I didn’t like it. This is good. I rate that.”
