Yorkshire residents have been dubbed the most stern-faced in Britain, smiling less than any other region, a new study reveals. In contrast, those residing in the West Midlands are the nation’s cheeriest, flashing their pearly whites at least 17 times a day, while Yorkshire and Humber locals muster a mere 11 smiles. Londoners aren’t far off the top spot, cracking a smile 16 times daily, with North Westerners averaging 14.
The survey of 2,000 adults discovered that Brits typically flash a grin 14 times a day. So, what brings about these bursts of joy? Good news, a cracking joke, or reading something amusing are the main triggers, and when it comes to spreading the joy, Brits believe that flashing a smile themselves or dishing out a compliment does the trick.
Monique Kemperman, a spokesperson for Plants & Flowers Foundation Holland, which commissioned the research in conjunction with World Smile Day on the 3rd October, said: “It’s interesting to see how smiling differs across the UK.
“Our figures show that far from the ‘dour northerners’ of cliché, people in the north of the country are more than happy to grin when needed.
“While some regions may smile less often, it’s clear that people everywhere are ready to share a grin when something brightens their day. But it’s fair to say across the entirety of the UK, more could be done to get people grinning – and that starts with every one of us.”
When it comes to presents guaranteed to brighten someone’s day, a bouquet of their favourite flowers leads the way, with an urgent chocolate delivery running a close second.
To lift their spirits, 45 per cent of Britons put on their beloved music or indulge in feel-good television programmes and films. A stroll in the fresh air does the trick for 41 per cent, whilst 24 per cent seek comfort in a snuggle from their beloved pet.
Yet merely 58 per cent of people regard themselves as a ‘smiley’ individual, with Londoners being the most inclined to claim this trait. Nevertheless, just half of those residing in the South East believe they’re frequent smilers.
The survey also explored what provides the British public with cause to grin, revealing that a welcoming neighbourhood community serves as the primary smile-trigger.
Meanwhile, half highlighted the country’s stunning countryside, and 38 per cent chose the excellent regional cuisine and beverages available, the OnePoll.com data revealed.
Additionally, 76 per cent agree that flowers make an excellent present to uplift someone or bring them joy.
Kemperman added: “When you look out of the window and see the rain clouds, it can be hard to remember a reason to smile. But even on the darkest days, there are always things that can bring us a little bit of light.
“It might be a funny message from a friend, a fond memory, or a beautiful bunch of your favourite flowers – but staying positive is always key.”
